Origins

Mainly found in the Northern Hemisphere, the oak is a member of the beech family, genus quercus.

Shape

There are more than 450 species of oak (quercus) of which many are deciduous ; and there are also several oaks with evergreen or semi-evergreen leaves. Its fruit, the acorn is fixed in a cup.

Among the most frequent species, there are :

The live oak or ilex, an evergreen species originating from the Mediterranean region which is used as a decorative tree in gardens and parks.
The cork oak from which the bark is harvested for making corks.
The red oaks mainly found on the American continent.

Use

Its wood is mainly used in exterior and interior joinery (cabinet making, floors, staircases, carpentry, structures).
